Beyond the Fade: A Couple Redefines Style with Locs

As part of my upcoming exhibition BAD Hair Uprooted, I ask people about their choice to wear locs. Despite locs being the most natural way to grow African tresses long, the hairstyle is still the most stereotyped in the world.

Empress De Rah and her Boo

This beautiful, joyous couple was strolling through the streets of Bedstuy when I caught up with them. Empress Deh Ya and her boo Manningtricoffee were happy to share their story, so here it goes. Watch the video and please let us know what you think.

A couple that is not just turning heads with their stunning style, but challenging stereotypes and embracing individuality in the face of professional expectations.

Empress with a radiant smile, describes the newfound freedom her locks represent. No longer confined by limiting styles, she can finally embrace her natural beauty. Her partner, equally radiant, adds that his decision to lock his hair in December 2022 went beyond just supporting his partner. He craved a dynamic style that defied the corporate norm, a statement against the rigid expectations of the professional world.

A shared Locs Journey

Their journey extends beyond the initial commitment. A shared laugh reveals the answer: a silk pillowcase! Maintaining the health of their luxurious locks requires dedication, and regular visits to the talented Braids_by_ebony on Instagram are a must-have. Every 3-4 months, their hair gets the expert care it deserves.

But the most transformative element isn't the hair itself. It's the confidence and self-assuredness that emanates from them. Empress feels liberated to express her natural self, while her partner uses his hairstyle as a bold statement in his workplace, proving that dreadlocks don't diminish professionalism.

This isn't just a story about a hairstyle; it's a celebration of self-expression. It's about defying expectations and embracing what makes you unique.

This inspiring couple proves that rocking locks can be a powerful statement, both personally and professionally. They're a walking testament to the beauty of individuality, a message that resonates far beyond the interview setting.
