A Farewell Full of Inspiration: BAD Hair Uprooted & Royalty on the Runway

A Farewell Full of Inspiration: BAD Hair Uprooted & Royalty on the Runway

Brooklyn, NY, witnessed a magical evening of celebration, culture, and natural hair appreciation at my farewell Hair & Fashion Show. It was an event to remember, where creativity, authenticity, and bold statements about hair and identity were front and center.

Setting the Tone: Inspiration and Goals

The evening began with an enlightening conversation led by the visionary Creative Director Hollis King, who interviewed me about my inspiration behind BAD Hair Uprooted and my journey as a natural hair advocate. As I shared my goals, I emphasized that my mission is not to enforce natural hair but to challenge the current beauty standard.

"The standard today is straight and weave—which isn’t natural. I want the standard to start at natural, so everyone can confidently choose how to style their hair, beginning with their God-given texture."

The Royal Runway: Models Bring Visions to Life

The models exuded grace and confidence, walking the runway in ensembles from What Naturals Love. Each outfit was carefully selected to complement the models’ unique presence, creating an unforgettable fusion of style and natural beauty. The designs showcased vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and empowering silhouettes, bringing the essence of royalty to life.

Model Tim Victor, whose hair was styled by the talented @KalifaLondon, summed it up perfectly:
"About last night. ROYALTY! 🤴🏾"

Behind the Scenes: A First-Timer’s Experience

For many, the show was a new experience, and the supportive energy among the team made it seamless. As Meredith, the only model from Suriname shared:
"This was my first time walking the runway, and I was so nervous. But the energy, collaboration, and Mireille’s vision made everything flow naturally. I had such a great time that I forgot about my nerves!"

Natural Hair Magic: Debra Hareby’s Live Demonstration

With over 20 years of experience in the natural hair care industry, Debra Hareby wowed the audience with a live styling demonstration. Onstage, she transformed model Brigitte with a stunning afro and loc wig, accentuating it with flowers. It was a testament to the beauty and versatility of natural hair, further proving that afro-textured hair holds unmatched artistic possibilities.

Audience Engagement: Thought-Provoking Questions

The event wasn’t just about fashion—it was a dialogue. During the Q&A, an audience member asked, “Do you want everyone to be natural?” My answer was clear:
"No, I want natural hair to be the starting standard, not an exception. It should be normalized, so people have the freedom to wear their hair however they choose without discrimination or pressure to conform."

Gratitude: Thank You to Everyone

I cannot express enough gratitude to everyone who contributed to making this event a success.

To the incredible models, thank you for bringing your energy, confidence, and creativity to the runway. You brought my vision to life with such grace and elegance.

To the Billie Holiday Theatre staff, your support and professionalism made this event seamless and allowed us to create something truly special in such an iconic venue.

To the audience, thank you for showing up and engaging so wholeheartedly. Your enthusiasm, questions, and support meant the world to me and helped make this event a true celebration of natural hair, culture, and identity.

To everyone behind the scenes—designers, stylists, photographers, and more—thank you for your tireless dedication and effort. This evening would not have been possible without you.

A Beautiful Goodbye

The show marked the culmination of an incredible chapter and celebrated the resilience, creativity, and cultural richness of natural hair. Feedback from both the audience and participants affirmed the impact of the evening:
"Mireille, thank you for orchestrating such a meaningful and beautiful experience. Your vision and dedication inspire us all!"

As I move forward, this show remains a shining example of how far we’ve come in embracing natural hair and celebrating its rightful place in beauty and fashion.
