Curated by award-winning Social Entrepreneur and photographer Mireille Liong, M.S, The Billie Holiday Theatre will host Health, Hair & Headwraps: Holiday Hair Tutorial & Fashion Show, a special event celebrating the beauty, diversity, and resilience of Black hair in support of Liong’s groundbreaking exhibition - BAD Hair Uprooted: The Untold History of Black Hair.
BAD Hair Uprooted at the Billie Holiday Theatre
Currently on view in The Billie’s lobby gallery, the stunning collection includes 20 years of natural hair portraits and explores the complex history and societal pressures surrounding Black hair.
To be held on November 22nd at 7pm, the interactive event will bring the exhibition to life and will include:
- a Q&A session with Liong that delves into her journey as a natural hair advocate, her motivations for creating BAD Hair Uprooted, and her aspirations for the future of hair equality;
Pangi wraps handmade by the Maroon people of Suriname
- a headwrap demonstration showcasing the art and cultural significance of head wrapping with Pangi wraps handmade by the Maroon people of Suriname, who have a rich tradition of symbolic and meaningful headwraps;
- and a holiday hair and fashion show featuring dazzling holiday hairstyles and vibrant fashion presented by top locticians and stylists and paired with curated styles from What Naturals Love.
BAD Hair Uprooted: The Untold History of Black Hair is on view at The Billie Holiday Theatre through November 26.
