In Memory of Sherida Ter Haar
Yesterday, I received the sad news that Sherida Ter Haar passed away after a battle with cancer. According to a close mutual friend, she had been struggling with the disease for about a year.
Sherida was one of the models I worked with over the years, and looking back, some of my favorite memories are the photoshoots we did together.
From the Moroccan Magic Dress to the African Gown with a Train, Sherida brought each look to life in her own way. She had a laid-back personality and was always easy to work with. She wasn't someone who demanded attention, but once the camera came out, she seemed to genuinely enjoy the experience.
One of my favorite shoots was on the brownstone steps in Bed-Stuy. The African gown with a train had been returned by a customer, and by chance it was exactly Sherida's size. It fit her perfectly. True my lense I watched her walk in that gown and pose on the steps, wearing a hair cuff and later some of my pre-tied headwraps. She looked absolutely stunning and seemed to be having a great time.
Another memory that stands out is our Moroccan Magic Dress photoshoot with a mutual friend. You could see them having fun trying and getting their posing on.
Sherida loved modeling. The fashion world in New York can be a difficult place to break into, but I always had the feeling that being a model was something she truly wanted. Whether she was wearing an elegant gown, a headwrap, or simply showcasing her beautiful natural hair, she carried herself with a quiet confidence that translated beautifully in photographs.
One of the photos from our shoots remained her Facebook profile picture for years. Every time I saw it, it made me smile, knowing how much she enjoyed that image.
I am grateful that our paths crossed and that I had the opportunity to work with her. Through the photographs, a part of her spirit will always remain.

Thank you, Sherida. I think this was your favorite photo.
Rest in peace.🙏🏽
