Rwanda Live: Let’s Explore the Land of a Thousand Hills Together
From uphill struggles to breathtaking views, join me live as I walk, explore, and share the beauty of Rwanda.
One month on the continent and I am in awe. Rwanda is absolutely beautiful. The hills, the fruit, the people — I am enjoying it all and might be falling in love.
As an avid walker, who aims to get at least one hour of steps in per day, I’ve been exploring Kigali on foot whenever I can. That is actually also how you get the most out of a city. However, the hills are a challenge. I am not gonna lie. I’ve never ever been out of breath so many times in my life, just by walking.
The Hills and Valleys of Kibagabaga, Kigali
The way to the Afri Farmers Market and the gym is literally an uphill battle. Whether I go get groceries or go for a workout, I have to stop to catch my breath at least once. Still, it doesn’t really bother me. I just pause, take a deep breath, then look around and enjoy my surroundings. It reminds me to stop, breathe and take it all in: I am here. I am in Africa. I am in Rwanda.
An impression - 1 month in Rwanda
Catching my breath while looking over the city of a thousand hills feels surreal and wonderful. Downhill is much, much easier and a lot of fun. Reminds me of being a kid, the freedom you feel when running down a Kigali hill is everything but you still have to be careful. Some slopes are very steep. If the surface is smooth, you can easily slip; if it’s rough, you have to watch your ankles not to trip.
I once proudly climbed up a super steep hill only to realize going down was the real challenge. What should have taken 3 seconds to descend took about 5 minutes. In the end I was one and all smiles because I finally ended up on my feet and not on my behind!
Explore Rwanda Live: So Much More to See
In just one month, I’ve managed to get an apartment, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, take a cooking class, discover quite a few restaurants, go to the mall while walking 92 miles. Still, there is so much more to see, to experience. Since my monthly average in Amsterdam was over 200 miles, there is room for a whole lot more and I’d love to take you with me — live!
Whether you are on TikTok, Youtube or Facebook, together we can go shopping, try local food, hike the hills, and dive into Rwanda’s rich culture. There are 26,338 square kilometers (about 10,169 square miles) of this incredible country to explore — and I'd love for you to join me.
