How to Care for your Kinky Curly Wig

How to Care for your Kinky Curly Wig

When you invest in a beautiful kinky curly wig—whether to switch up your look, protect your locs, natural hair, or just because you love big hair—it only makes sense to take care of it the right way. Especially when your wig is made of High Temperature Fiber, a heat-resistant synthetic that looks natural but still needs gentle love.

I’ve seen too many curly wigs go from gorgeous to frizzy mess because people used the wrong tools, harsh products, or just didn’t know how to bring the curls back to life. So here are my best tips, plus two of my favorite tools—the What Naturals Love Microfiber Towel and the Loc Glove—that will help you keep your curls soft, defined, and beautiful.

Keep Your Curls Poppin’ with the Right Tools and Care

Step 1: Gentle Detangling — Fingers First

Curly synthetic wigs should never be brushed or combed when dry. That’s the fastest way to destroy the curl pattern.
Instead, use your fingers or, better yet, get a Loc Glove.
The Loc Glove is known to remove lint and dust from locs, but it works just as well to define curls and refresh your wig without pulling the curls apart.

Pro Tip: Slip on your Loc Glove and gently scrunch the curls upward. This keeps the coils intact and revives their shape without frizzing them out.

Step 2: Wash With Care

Depending on how often you wear your wig, wash it every 2 to 4 weeks.
✔️ Fill a basin with lukewarm water and add a mild synthetic wig shampoo.
✔️ Submerge the wig and gently swish. No rubbing, no wringing.
✔️ Rinse thoroughly and follow with a wig-safe conditioner. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes.

Step 3: Dry the Smart Way with a Microfiber Towel

After washing, it’s time to dry—but please don’t grab your regular cotton towel. Cotton roughens the hair fibers and creates static. Instead, use the What Naturals Love Microfiber Towel, which:

  • Absorbs excess water gently,

  • Reduces frizz, and

  • Protects the curl pattern.

Wrap your wig in the towel and lightly press (never wring). Then place the wig on a stand and let it air dry naturally.

Step 4: Revive the Curl Pattern

While your wig is still damp:

  • Lightly spritz it with a wig conditioner or a leave-in diluted with water.

  • Scrunch the curls back into shape using your Loc Glove or your hands.

  • If the curls look stretched out, twist small sections around your finger to reshape them.

High Temperature Fiber wigs can handle low heat, but honestly, if you take care of them like this, you won’t need a curling iron at all.

Step 5: Daily Refresh

On days when your curls look flat or dry:

  • Lightly mist your wig with water and a little leave-in.

  • Scrunch gently with your Loc Glove to bring the bounce back.

Step 6: Store Safely

When you’re not wearing your wig, keep it on a wig stand or in a satin bag. Protect it from dust, direct sunlight, and unnecessary heat.

My Final Tip

Your wig should be an extension of your beauty, not a chore to maintain. With the right care—and by using tools like the Loc Glove and Microfiber Towel—you’ll keep those curls fresh, soft, and full of life.
