Throwback Thursday: Reliving the BAD Hair Uprooted Exhibition

Can you believe it's been almost a decade since the groundbreaking BAD Hair Uprooted exhibition took place? It's time to revisit this unforgettable event and celebrate the incredible talent and beauty showcased that day.

Introduction by Lurie Daniel Favors author of Afro State of Mind

Remember those stunning textures, creative styles, and the vibrant energy that filled the room? It was an absolute masterpiece! And let's not forget the incredible impact we made together by sharing these natural hairstyles on social media. We changed perceptions and sparked conversations about beauty and self-expression.

The exhibition was extra special because it was held right here in our beloved Bedstuy neighborhood. This vibrant part of Brooklyn has become a home away from home for so many of us. It was an honor to feature Council Member Jumaane Williams and Robert E. Cornegy in the exhibition. Their locks added a powerful message to our event, showcasing our commitment to justice and changing perceptions one headshot at a time.

Introducing me that day was the fabulous Lurie Daniel Favors, whose iconic Afro remains a showstopper. Her portrait, "The Fro of the 2000's," continues to spark controversy on social media and inspired her to write the inspiring memoir, "Afro State of Mind: Memories of a Nappy Headed Black Girl."

Another highlight was the incredible Master Loctition and Loc Sculptor, Shakilla. Her natural hairstyle, "Crown of Locs," was not only a centerpiece of the exhibition but also featured on the cover of my book. Shakilla's unmatched talent was on full display as she styled three models who turned heads all evening.

And who could forget the beautiful Tiffany B Chanel and Natasha Gaspard, two other models featured in the book and exhibition?

A special thanks goes out to Greenspacenyc for allowing us to host the exhibition in their community art space. Laura Scherling believed in my vision from the beginning, and Jeff Kasper did an amazing job with the installation.

Join us again on October 10th at the Billy Holiday Theatre for another unforgettable exhibition. Let's celebrate the beauty of natural hair and continue to inspire and empower each other. Click to RSVP for free.
