Lovaeta Amoako - Creator of Locnificient Fest Event

Meet Lovaeta Amoako: The Visionary Behind Locnificent Fest

As part of the upcoming exhibition BAD Hair Uprooted, We ask people about their choice to wear locs. Despite locs being the most natural way to grow African tresses long, the hairstyle is still the most stereotyped in the world.

Locnificent: A Celebration of Culture and Natural Hair

In a city that never sleeps, where trends come and go faster than a subway, there exists a celebration of authenticity and self-love. At the heart of this movement is Lovaeta Amoako, the dynamic force behind Locnificent Fest. This annual event has become a cornerstone for the natural hair community and a platform to celebrate diaspora culture.

From Personal Passion to Public Platform

A native New Yorker with Ghanaian roots, Lovaeta's passion for locs and natural hair runs deep. Her journey to creating Locnificent Fest was as inspiring as the event itself. It began with a personal development exercise where she outlined goals for finance, personal growth, and community impact. A desire to celebrate locs and appreciation for natural hair ignited the spark that would become Locnificent.

“I did the first one in 2018 and the purpose of it is to bring people together, celebrate locs and natural hair, diaspora culture and create a space for us all to feel connected and at home,” Lovaeta shares. And she has undoubtedly achieved this. Locnificent Fest has grown from a small gathering of friends to a widely anticipated event that attracts people from all walks of life.

A Growing Movement

Lovaeta's own hair journey is a testament to her belief in the beauty of natural hair. She started her locs over 13 years ago, inspired by the remarkable and beautiful hairstyles she saw around her. “There's a lot of misconceptions and negative connotations tied to locs,” she explains. “I just want to showcase that locs are beautiful in all forms.

More Than Just Hair

Beyond the stunning hairstyles and vibrant energy, Locnificent Fest is about fostering a sense of community. It's a space where people can connect, share experiences, and celebrate their heritage. The event has become a platform to challenge stereotypes and promote self-acceptance.

A Vision for the Future

As Lovaeta prepares for the sixth edition of Locnificent Fest with the theme "Diaspora Connections," it's clear that her vision for the event continues to evolve. By bringing together the diaspora, including Afro-Latinos and African Americans, she aims to create an even more inclusive and empowering experience.
